Aluminium Composite Panels vs Aluminium

When we think of aluminium the words strong and durable come to mind. This makes it suitable for a wide variety of projects, but which type of aluminium is the best?

In this months blog we take a look at some of the pros and cons of two variations of the material, comparing them to help you decide which will have the best result for your project.

Aluminium Composite Panels

  • Also known as ACM, this is often referred to as a sandwich panel. This is due to the sandwiching of 2 aluminium cover sheets around a polyethene core.
  • This material is strong, lightweight and rigid, making it a great construction material.
  • It is a quick and easy material to install.
  • An excellent high-quality finish which is perfect for adding text and graphics, enhancing the design once printed.
  • Even though the material is flat and sturdy, it can be moulded to suit your project.
  • Versatile to be used inside or outdoors.
  • It will not stain, dirt will simply wash off.
  • Weather and corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for external facades.
  • This material is fully recyclable and eco-friendly, so it can be reused.
  • A cost-effective and economical way to complete a project.
  • Available in different versions such as Diabond, Dilite, Hylite, and I-bond Hoarding Panel.

Standard Aluminium

  • Standard aluminium has a light density, making it easy to carry and hold whilst being fixed into place.
  • It can be a little cheaper to purchase than other aluminium materials, which can be useful if you are new to construction and are likely to require practice sheets.
  • Aluminium has anti-corrosive properties, meaning it will remain in good condition for longer on most projects that you have.
  • A very strong material, several sections can be welded together to make it even stronger or to increase the size.
  • Standard aluminium is fully recyclable, therefore good for the environment.
  • This is a flexible material that can be shaped easily to fit your project.
  • It is visually flat, which offers a neater and slicker finish.

Key Similarities

  • Both Standard and Composite Panel Aluminium have a good strength to weight ratio, better than most other metals.
  • Both types of aluminium are available in a wide range of standard colours.
  • They are both incredibly versatile, with the ability to be rolled and shaped to fit an endless list of jobs.

Key Differences

  • Aluminium Composite Panels are more likely to remain flat after installation without any wrinkling. It will retain its shape even in extreme temperatures, whereas standard aluminium may not.
  • Aluminium Composite Panels are more likely to dent and is not impact resistant to extreme storms for example. Standard aluminium, however, can be strengthened by welding several pieces together.
  • If the joints are not sealed properly, Aluminium Composite Panels may allow water to leak in when it rains.
  • Although both types of aluminium are light, the standard form is a little lighter due to the single sheet density. This may be preferable if you are fitting it on your own.
